I too think the internal work is underrepresented in permaculture discussions, though I’m not sure yet how to safely approach the topic with others. So many pitfalls, ya know?

Someone I have great respect for sharing their internal journey in relation to peak-awareness is Paul Chefurka. He has chronicled his journey on his website http://www.paulchefurka.ca/

Ultimately he became a Buddhist, but not before many years of intense internal struggle. I find his description of the “continuum of awareness” as he puts it useful in remembering that we are all at different points in our journey. And that journey, for those of us inclined to this life perspective, not only includes your run of the mill spiritual questions but coming to grips with the limits to growth that have been ignored or denied for most of human civilization.

It’s a lot to take in, especially while having to keep one foot within the bounds of societal norms. Throw in the added complexities of being a white, cis-gendered, American who is trying not to suck, and I never have to wonder why so many people take the blue pill.

Any thoughts on how we can better foster the heart and soul work of permaculture in Kalamazoo?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8416923201642990454.post-61190958207122374992015-12-16T12:34:27.423-05:002015-12-16T12:34:27.423-05:00Messed up a link in my post above:

I haven't see the latest PC Design issue; I look forward to getting a chance to read it, sounds excellent.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14135334303115615082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8416923201642990454.post-69794103715225688222015-12-16T10:44:31.714-05:002015-12-16T10:44:31.714-05:00LuckymortalDecember 16, 2015 at 7:33 AM

Honestly, my whitey-mc-whiterson initial reaction was that, while I "supported" it in theory- as a self-appointed ally and social justice activist - I didn't need to read a whole issue devoted to social justice issues INSTEAD of Permaculture. Boy was that clueless. This issue was the most cutting-edge and advanced Permaculture I've seen out the magazine.

For those interested in the intersection of social justice and Permaculture, I wanted to include a few resources that I find inspiring:

The Black Permaculture Network: https://lilliehousekzoo.wordpress.com/community-supported-forest-garden-program/

Permaculture For Ecological and Social Transformation http://permaculturefeast.org

The "Decolonizing Permaculture" article by Heather Jo Flores: http://heather-jo-flores.blogspot.com/2015/11/decolonizing-permaculture-bridging-gap.html

Our Kitchen Table, the gold standard for Intersectional Permaculture work in Michigan: okt-justice.org

Michael Hoaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15728642724953659658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8416923201642990454.post-31048151090756267882015-12-10T18:34:40.651-05:002015-12-10T18:34:40.651-05:00Really good post, and cool to have a "guest&q...Really good post, and cool to have a "guest" writer on the blog! I have to admit that at first glance I bristled at the word "Spiritual," since I consider myself allergic to that sort of stuff and generally avoid anything that wades into those waters, but after skimming the first few paragraphs and reading through the latter 2/3rds of the article, I came back to the top and re-read it all.

Beautifully written and it makes a lot of compelling and necessary points which resonate with folks like me, who are among the white male hetero majority you speak of but want to see PC expand to be much more diverse. Thank you for writing this, I hope it emboldens you to raise your voice and share more of your thoughts and works with the world. Incidentally this article would've also been a perfect fit for the latest issue of Permaculture Design magazine, whose theme is "Decolonizing Permaculture." I look forward to reading more from Rachelle here or elsewhere!PJ Chmielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13172487759311264254noreply@blogger.com
